Hearts of Durham (HOD), a volunteer group, recently put on its latest fundraising event, the Big Hearts Draw at the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences.

Every year,  HOD selects one community initiative based on the priorities within the region, says the organization’s website.

The Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health is this year’s selection.

The event was held at the rotunda on the grounds of the Ontario Shores Centre, where hopeful winners gathered around to hear the results. Members of the Whitby Fury hockey team, Dan Carter and Jennifer Clark, executive director of the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Services, were all present at the drawing.

Over the last two months, tickets for the Big Hearts Draw have been sold, with more than $10,000 worth of prizes available to be won.

“Events such as the Big Hearts Draw not only help to raise funds for our charity but also extends our reach and helps to raise much needed awareness about our 2010/2011 charity of choice,” says HOD member Kira Keast in a release.

Draw prizes included a $5,000 travel gift certificate, a 50’’ plasma TV and home theatre system and a $1,000 Visa gift certificate.
