Building a Stronger Community

New Starts for Women Victims of Violence

Ajax, ON, September 2, 2008 – Herizon House women’s shelter in Ajax has long
benefited from the generous support of the community through the donation of used and
new clothing and household goods. In fact, due to the volume of donations and the
shelter’s limited resources to handle, sort and store the items, Herizon House had to
refuse many donations until now.
Thanks to the enthusiastic support of The Hearts of Durham, Herizon House will finally
have a home for its donations centre. “New Starts from the Hearts” at 566 Kingston Rd.
West, just east of Church Street in Ajax is slated to open on Saturday September 27th.
Hearts of Durham is a unique volunteer group made up of individuals who support and
reinvest in their community. Members include local mothers, fathers, and professionals.
Hearts of Durham is dedicated to encouraging local organizations committed to building

Coming to Herizon House is the first step towards hope. Leaving Herizon House is the
next step. So, although the store is open to the public, it will also help women who are
starting over by providing access to clothing and household items. While women are in
the shelter they earn store credits when they take positive action for themselves, their
children or the shelter. This may include attending a life skills program, taking their kids
to the library or helping with extra chores at the shelter. This system builds independence
and self-esteem – important steps in recovering from the stigma and shame that women
experience in an abusive relationship.
The store will be open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9 – 6 pm starting Saturday
September 27th and will gratefully accept donations on Tuesdays between 9 – 5. For more
