Building a Stronger Community

The Golden Ticket Benefit

Back in 2006 a group of seven neighbours got together and decided they wanted to give back to the community and demonstrate to their kids the importance and value of doing for others. The seven ladies became the "Hearts of Durham" and on April 18th they held their largest fundraising event to date- the 4th Annual Hearts of Durham Gala at Deer Creek Gold & Banquet Facility. This year's theme was a Willy-Wonka inspired "Golden Ticket benefit". The ballroom was stunning in pink and lime green and over over 400 supporteers, dressed glamourously for the occasion attended. The event featured live entertainment, a silent auction (my bid on the Jonas Brothers tickets for my daughters apparently fell way short!) and a live auction (featuring some incredible packages, ranging in value from $1,000-$6,000, with titles such as the "Fizzy Bubbles Soiree" and the Oompa Loompa Music & Dreams). The event raised $83,000 for the Durham Children's Aid Foundation. Organizers asked SNAP to extend a very special thank you to sponsors Secrets of Simplicity, Rogers, OPG, Veridan, Andrew Shaw – Investors Group, PBI Office Interiors
Bell, Derrick Baird – Min Com Realty and
Scotia Bank as well as the many who contributed auction items. This coming year the Hearts of Durham will be working to raise funds for Feed the Need in Durham, their 2010 charity of choice. For more information visit
