The Hearts of Durham are roaring with excitement!  And the group, a high-energy, selfless band of dolls have once again outdone themselves with this year’s gala, “The Bees- Knees.”

“The Bees-Knees,” if you’re not familiar, is one of the many slang terms such as the “Cat’s Meow,” and the “Cat’s Pyjamas,” which were coined during the 1920’s. Fresh out of World War I, it was a glamorous, explosive era, which saw inventions such as the telephone, the automobile and the airplane. A poster decade for social change, the 20’s were revolutionary in putting emphasis on youth over the older generations and had a tremendous influence on main stream society. Even today, although we may not realize it, our everyday conversation is derived from lot of the jargon that originated during their flapper sub-culture.

The term “Bees-Knees,” describes an extraordinary person, thing, idea; the ultimate. And that’s just what Saturday, April 17, 2010 pledges to be! The evening, which begins with cocktails at 5:45 p.m., is in support of Feed the Need – Durham (FTND), a non-profit organization seeking to improve the collection and distribution of food and available resources to emergency food providers in Durham Region. Food donations are being collected at the door so please bring as much as you can and receive a free cocktail coupon!”

The Bees Knees” promises to bring swanky back with it’s Great Gatsby theme, so picture this:  It’s 1925. The Titanic’s been gone over 10 years. Amelia Earhart has taken her first flight. Al Capone and Busy Siegel are hittin’ every joint this side of Chicago. Art Deco is all the rage and speakeasies are poppin’ up on every corner. Thanks to prohibition, dirty gin martinis and Duke Ellington, jazz is where it’s at, and you can be there too!

The benefit will be held at Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility on Saturday April 17th, 2010 and hosted once again by popular and incredibly accomplished comedian, actor and media personality, Durham Region’s very own, totally swell guy, Neil Crone.

“The Bees-Knees” is the fifth annual benefit for the Hearts of Durham, who every year chose a different organization as their lucky recipient. Former beneficiaries include Hearth Place, Herizon House and the Durham Region Children’s Aid Foundation.

Both tickets, which have been on sale since February 1st, and sponsorship opportunities are going fast but are still available by logging on to the Hearts of Durham website located at http://www.heartsofdurham.com. Tickets are 90 clams ($90) per person and include a four course gourmet meal, wine with dinner and a spiffy SWAG bag for each guest. The evening will feature 1920’s entertainment, dancing, live and silent auctions, and the ever popular, Hearts of Durham balloon pops.

So, come on all you debs! Don’t be a wet blanket! It’s time to doll up your chassis, put on your glad rags, grab your daddy and kick up your feet! We’re putting on the ritz at this nifty juice joint!
