Champions with Heart 2014-2015


What is a Champion with Heart?

A "Champion with Heart" is an individual or business in our community who agrees to use their network and assist with fundraising in partnership with Hearts of Durham.   All proceeds of Champion fundraising will go directly to the Hearts of Durham Charity of Choice, ALS Durham Region.  Champions are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of those affected by ALS in Durham Region.

2014/2015 Champions With Heart

Rocky Varcoe & Sian Gibson - $10,000                                                                                                     Hearts member Sian Gibson and long-time Hearts supporter Rocky Varcoe, hosted the BIGGEST Ice Bucket Challenge ever at LIVEact Theater in Whitby.  Over 130 people (and a very cute puppy) lined up to be doused with ice water on September 1st.  With the support from our local community, the event raised over $10,000 in support of ALS Canada!  A HUGE thank you to Sian and Rocky for organizing such an amazing event.

Ian McCutcheon, ServiceMaster of Durham - $1,500                                                                             Hearts of Durham is thrilled to welcome Ian McCutcheon back as a Champion With Heart for 2015! Ian is a long-time Hearts supporter who has been a Wishmaker with us in the past. Ian will be hosting a series of Celebrity Bartending events across Durham Region over the next few weeks to help raise funds in support of ALS Canada.  Please visit our Events page for details and join us when you can.


DH Tooling - $630                                                                                                                                            Carrie & Dave Hill recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of their business in Oshawa and, with the generosity of their staff, raised $630 for ALS!  Thank you to all of these Community Champions.

Royal Oak Whitby & Whitby North - $5,000                                                                                                 Matt Cardwell, a constant supporter of Hearts of Durham, is once again assisting us with our fund raising efforts.  Through the Coins for a Cause campaign held at both of his two Royal Oak Pub locations (Whitby Shores and Whitby North), as well as the recent Celebrity Bartending Events, Matt has helped raise $5,000! All proceeds are going directly to ALS Canada.  Special Thanks to Matt and to everyone who donated and participated in the events.


Tamara McKee, Stilettos for the Cure - $6,700                                                                                        Each year, Stilettos for the Cure hosts a successful fundraising event. This year, they chose to partner with us and raise funds in support of ALS Canada. An Evening of Bachelors was a tremendous success and we raised $6,700 for ALS, all while having a great time!  Thank you to Tamara and Stilettos for the Cure for their partnership and support.

Trim Tech Interiors & Glass - $500                                                                                                          Jason Bowen and his team have supported Hearts of Durham fundraising initiatives many times in the past. We are grateful to have their support once again this year as we raise funds for clients and their families living with ALS in Durham region.

Sue Twaites, The Gatehouse Salon & Spa - $1,620                                                                           Gatehouse Salon & Spa owner Sue Twaites, holds an annual Christmas open house in support of a local charity. This year we were fortunate to be the recipients of Sue's generosity and Sue raised $1,620 for ALS Canada! Thank you Sue.

Molly Turnbull, I Do Bridal Boutique - $750                                                                                               Molly Turnbull, owner of I Do Bridal Boutique in Courtice, hosted the Grand Opening of her new store and generously donated a portion of all proceeds from the evening to ALS Canada.  Thank you Molly for your support!
